Smart Agriculture
Smart, Solar-Powered Agriculture.
Ghanaian smallholders lose roughly a third of their fruit and vegetables after harvest. Worldtech attacks that loss directly — with off-grid solar cold storage, agro-photovoltaics, solar irrigation and agro-processing.
In brief
The EcoRecharge Coldroom is an off-grid, portable, remotely-monitored, solar-powered walk-in cold room with reusable crates and a pay-as-you-store option. It targets the ~30% of produce lost post-harvest. GIZ has reserved 20 cold rooms from a batch under construction, and Worldtech’s dream is to install 3,000 across Ghana. We also deliver agro-PV, solar irrigation and solar agro-processing.
The EcoRecharge Coldroom
Our centrepiece is the EcoRecharge Coldroom — an off-grid, portable, remotely-monitored, solar-powered walk-in cold room. It ships with reusable crates and a pay-as-you-store option, so a smallholder or aggregator can cool produce without owning the unit outright.
Because it runs on solar with storage, it keeps cooling where the grid is weak or absent — exactly where post-harvest loss is worst.
Why does Ghana lose 30% of its harvest?
Without cold storage near the farm, fruit and vegetables spoil before they reach a market. Ghanaian smallholders lose roughly 30% of their produce this way. Worldtech’s dream is to install 3,000 cold rooms across Ghana — and GIZ has reserved 20 from a batch currently under construction.
The solar walk-in cold room was recognised at Energy Camp Africa in Nairobi.
Agro-photovoltaics: crops under panels
With agro-photovoltaics, the same land grows crops and generates power — panels above, shade-tolerant crops below. It is dual land use that turns a field into a farm and a power station at once.
Solar irrigation, agro-processing and training
We pair cold storage with solar irrigation, solar-powered agro-processing equipment, and capacity building in sustainable farming — so farmers grow more, lose less, and add value before produce leaves the community.

Questions
Frequently asked.
- What is the EcoRecharge Coldroom?
- An off-grid, portable, remotely-monitored, solar-powered walk-in cold room with reusable crates. It keeps produce cool near the farm — where the grid is weak or absent — to cut post-harvest loss.
- What is “pay-as-you-store”?
- Instead of buying a cold room outright, a farmer or aggregator pays for the cooling capacity they use. It lowers the barrier for smallholders who could never afford their own unit.
- How much produce do Ghanaian farmers lose after harvest?
- Roughly 30% of fruit and vegetables are lost post-harvest, largely for want of cold storage near the farm. Solar cold rooms address that loss directly.
- What is agro-photovoltaics?
- Growing crops underneath raised solar panels — dual land use. The same land produces both food and electricity, with the panels providing partial shade for suitable crops.
- Is Worldtech working with any partners on cold storage?
- Yes — GIZ has reserved 20 cold rooms from a batch under construction, and the solar walk-in cold room was recognised at Energy Camp Africa in Nairobi.
